World Cup 2015

November/December 2015 saw the Irish national tag rugby team competing in the International Tag Federation World Cup for the first ever time. Ireland competed in five categories – Mixed, Mixed Senior, Mens, Ladies and Mens Over 30.

Elite Irish players from various regions in Ireland (Dublin, Limerick, Galway, Cork and Kildare) and London stepped up to play for their country in the World Cup against countries such as South Africa, New Zealand, Japan, Australia and Great Britain.

To play for Ireland, every player was either selected through an open trial system or selected after playing for their region (Dublin, Cork, Galway, London, Clare and Limerick) in the Regional Championships

Every player who was selected to play for their region and for Ireland was an amateur player who has devoted their time to and finances to what is now widely regarded as much more than an after-work social sport.

Ultimately the best reward for this commitment was that the best tag players got to represent Ireland in the Tag Rugby World Cup in the Kawanna Stadium, Sunshine Coast, Australia in early December 2015!

The Title Sponsor of Team Ireland was KPMG

Details of who are in Ireland's results can be found here and a full game schedule can be found here. Our teams performed admirably with the following records:

·        Our mixed open team just missed out on the quarter finals, after a record of 3 wins and two narrow losses and one heavy defeat in the pool stage.

·        Our men’s open team also came within 1 result of making the quarters with a record of 3 wins, 1 draw and 3 defeats.

·        Our mixed seniors performed admirably in a though group and won 2 games, lost 2 narrowly and 2 heavily.

·        Our men's 30s team and Ladies teams matched expectations by qualifying for our first ever World Cup quarter final appearances. With the Mens 30s losing to Australia      Barbarians and the Ladies team losing to eventual winners Australia.

The Irish Tag community should be very proud of the team Ireland performances as they represented the nation extremely well and helped ensure that Ireland will be a touring teams destination of choice going forward.

In 2016 Team Ireland will be taking on Great Britain in the away leg of the British and Irish Cup on the weekend of 3/4 September in London. The current expectation is that the Team Ireland squad selected for 2016 will represent Ireland against Australia in 2017 (as Australia are likely to tour Ireland prior to the 2017 Ireland squad being selected).
